New lawsuits filed in sexual assault, abuse case involving Cape Coral couple

Daniel and Jenise Spurgeon have been arrested on multiple charges of sexual and physical abuse of at least 10 adopted and foster children in their care.Three more victims have filed suit against a Cape Coral couple accused of sexual assault, abuse and molestation of as many as 15 children.
The lawsuits, which each seek $25 million in damages, stem from alleged long-term abuse and neglect in the foster/adoptive homes of Jenise and Daniel Spurgeon that occurred while they were living in Alabama.
The couple were charged with numerous counts of child abuse, sexual abuse, rape, human trafficking, sexual torture and other crimes against children.

In a recent open letter to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, 67 affiliates of the University of Alabama School of Law asked for the release of “all inmates over the age of 60; those with chronic illnesses, complex medical needs, compromised immune systems, and disabilities; and pregnant women” (“An open letter to Gov. Ivey from 67 in UA law community.”) In this open letter, students and professors from the law school specifically reference the Alabama Emergency Management Act, which asserts that the Governor has the power to exercise any “functions, powers and duties as are necessary to promote and secure the safety and protection of the civilian population” (Ala. Code § 31-9-8).
