Victims of Crime and Leniency
You may feel like no one else knows what you are going through.
We know the path you are traveling is hard.
No one has to fight this battle alone.
We will walk beside you.
January 2026 is National Stalking Awareness Month.
WHAT IS STALKING? While legal definitions of stalking vary between jurisdictions, a good working definition of stalking is: a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of others or suffer substantial emotional distress.

Victims of Crime and Leniency
Crime affects individuals and families across every community, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. For those impacted, navigating the criminal justice system can be overwhelming—often at a time of profound loss and trauma.
On the 45th anniversary of her daughter's death, Miriam Shehane shared the story of Quenette, and the effect her life had on crime victims in Alabama. VOCAL, Victims of Crime and Leniency was born from the tragedy that the Shehane family endured and their willingness to allow Quenette's legacy to help those who came after them.
MEET OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Community partners are the heart of a strong and responsive support system for crime victims. No single organization can meet every need that arises after victimization, which is why collaboration is essential. By working together, we create a network of care that surrounds victims with compassion, expertise, and timely assistance when they need it most.
Healing in Community
Healing doesn’t have to happen alone.
Peer support groups give victims a space to connect, share, create, and support one another—often forming friendships that last well beyond the group setting.
You Don’t Have to Know What to Ask
Many people call simply because they don’t know where to start. That’s okay.
Our advocates are here to help you sort through options, answer questions, and connect you to the right support.
What Court Advocacy Looks Like
Our advocates provide support, information, and presence- not legal representation - so victims can participate in the process with greater confidence and understanding.
